Breeds describe tendencies, not a guarantee. Every cat has its own personality. The test never recommends breeds that are considered torture breeding.

View cat portraitsThis is how the cat test works
Every breed in our lexicon has values for activity, grooming, talkativeness, affection and how well they get along on their own. There is also information about housing, children, experience, size and fur. The values from 1 to 5 are our editorial assessment from the breed standards and specialist sources that are included in the respective profile.
The test compares your answers with these values. The further a race is from your everyday life, the more points it loses. Some answers are more important than others: If you have a cat for the first time, you will see breeds that need a lot of experience much further behind. If you have small children in the household, breeds that we only recommend to a limited extent slide down the list. At the end there are the five breeds with the best fit.
Why some races never appear in the results
According to Section 11b of the Animal Welfare Act, cruel breeding is prohibited in Germany, as summarized by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety. This refers to breeding characteristics that cause pain, suffering or damage to the animals, sometimes without being seen from the outside.
An example is the Scottish Fold. Their folded ears are caused by maldevelopment of the cartilage, which, according to the British animal welfare organization UFAW, affects every cat with the folded ear gene and also attacks bones and joints. This test therefore never recommends breeds that we classify as torture breeding in our lexicon, no matter how well your answers would fit.
Pure cat or domestic cat?
A result of 90 percent does not mean that you have to buy a purebred cat. Many of the characteristics that are important to you can also be found in domestic cats without a pedigree. At the animal shelter you get to know the cat beforehand and see whether it prefers to lie on your lap or on top of the cupboard. You can read more about this in the profile of the domestic cat.
If you decide to get a pedigree cat, ask about health tests on the parents and see how the kittens grow up. You can find all breeds with profiles in the Overview of cat breeds.
After the test
Once your new cat has moved in, the cat food calculator will help you with the quantity, you can find name ideas in the cat names, and for the first few days with a young animal there is the checklist Kitten initial equipment.
Frequently asked questions about the cat test
Which cat is right for me?
This depends mainly on your everyday life: apartment or outdoor space, how long you will be away, how much care you want to provide and how much closeness you want. The test compares exactly these points with the breed values from our lexicon and shows you the five breeds with the best fit.
Which cat breed is suitable for beginners?
Breeds that we classify as suitable for first-time owners do not receive a deduction for the first cat answer in the test. Which of these suits you depends on your other answers. An adult house cat from the animal shelter whose personality you already know can also be a good start.
Which cat is suitable for the apartment?
In the apartment, cats need scratching opportunities, elevated places to lie down and daily play. Breeds that we only recommend to a limited extent for indoor keeping lose points in the test if you only choose to keep them indoors.
Why doesn't the test recommend Scottish Folds?
The Scottish Fold is considered torture breeding: According to UFAW, the folded ears are associated with a disease of the cartilage and bones that can cause painful joint damage. Cruel breeding is prohibited by Section 11b of the Animal Welfare Act. That's why the test never recommends such breeds.
How accurate is the cat test?
It shows tendencies. Breed values describe the average, each cat has its own personality. Get to know the cat before moving in, whether at the breeder or at the animal shelter.
Does the test save my answers?
No. The test only calculates in your browser and does not transmit anything to us.
