Each municipality sets the dog tax itself in its statutes. That's why the same dog can cost completely different things in two neighboring cities. In the 50 largest cities, the rate for a single dog on October 20, 2026 was between 84 euros in Augsburg and 186 euros in Mainz per year.
The second dog often makes the biggest difference. There are three models in our list:
- Same rate for every dog: In Cologne, each dog costs 174 euros.
- Additional dogs cost more: In Stuttgart, the first dog costs 144 euros, each additional dog costs 288 euros.
- Scaling per household: In Düsseldorf, a single dog costs 96 euros. If you keep two, you pay 150 euros for each, including the first one.
List dogs
Many statutes require many times more for dogs that a city classifies as dangerous. In our list this ranges from 468 euros in Dortmund to 1,056 euros in Nuremberg per year. Other cities, such as Leipzig, Dresden, Bremen or Cologne, do not have their own sentence. Which dogs are affected is regulated by the respective state law or the statutes themselves.
2026 or 2027?
For 2027, Hamburg, Munich and Nuremberg, among others, have decided on higher rates. Hamburg then charges 120 euros per dog, Munich 144 euros. If you choose 2027 and no change is known for your city, the calculator will calculate the current rates and tell you that.
What the computer doesn't know
He doesn't know about any exemptions or discounts. For example, many cities release dogs from animal shelters for a certain period of time, and guide dogs and assistance dogs often completely. Will the dog tax become more expensive in 2027?
In some cities, yes. Munich increases to 144 euros, Nuremberg to 144 euros for the first and 168 euros for each additional dog. According to the tax authorities, Hamburg is planning 120 euros per dog. The calculator will show whether something changes in your city as soon as the statutes mention it.
How much is the dog tax for listed dogs?
This is very different. In our list the rate ranges from 468 euros in Dortmund to 1,056 euros in Nuremberg per year; some cities do not have their own rate at all.
Are dogs from animal shelters exempt from dog tax?
In many cities for a certain period of time, but only upon request. In 2027, for example, Hamburg will introduce three tax-free years for animal shelter dogs. Your city's rules are in its statutes.
