Horse age calculator: What stage of life is my horse in?
Enter your horse's age. The calculator shows you the phase of life, from foal to senior, and what is important during this time. We deliberately do not convert into human years. We explain why below.
Your result
The boundaries between the phases are rough. Breed, attitude and health make a big difference. We do not show a conversion to human years because we have not found a published, comprehensible table or formula for this.
Capture years together
Whether a wild foal or a loyal senior: every phase of life has its own face. If you want to capture this time, turn your favorite photo into a portrait.
View horse portraitsAre there horse years in human years?
There are common conversion tables for dogs and cats. We have not found any published table or formula for horses whose origin can be traced. That's why this calculator doesn't show human years, but rather the phase of life your horse is currently in. This is the more useful question for everyday life anyway: What does my horse need now?
The phases of life at a glance
- Foal:under 1 year
- Yearling:1 year
- Young horse:2 to 5 years
- adult horse:6 to 14 years
- older horse:15 to 19 years
- Senior:from 20 years
Where the boundaries come from: Foals and yearlings are the usual terms used in breeding and feeding, and the Gruber table from the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture also divides them up this way. Veterinarian Jennifer Rice at PetMD describes the fact that many horses are almost full size by the age of 2, but continue to mature until around 6. That's why we count horses aged 6 and over as adults. The 15 year limit for older horses comes from British studies at the University of Liverpool (Ireland and colleagues, 2011 and 2012). The 20 years for seniors comes from an evaluation of 467 horses of this age at a university clinic in the USA (Brosnahan and Paradis, 2003).
Accompany older horses well
Older horses now make up a large proportion of all horses, write the authors of the Liverpool studies. They also showed how much is overlooked in the stable: the veterinarians found lameness when trotting in half of the horses examined over the age of 15, and lameness was reported by 23 percent of the owners. Changes to the hooves occurred in 80 percent and were reported in 27 percent.
For you this means: Schedule regular checks at the vet's office, even if your horse seems fit, and have his teeth checked. Keep an eye on the weightHorse weight calculatorThis can also be done without a scale. What your horse can snack on is statedWhat can horses eat?.
Frequently asked questions about horse age
How old is my horse in human years?
We have not found a scientifically proven conversion. That's why the calculator shows the phase of life instead of human years. The phase tells you more about what your horse needs now.
When does a horse become a senior?
Studies set the limit differently: British studies count horses aged 15 and over as geriatric, while a large US clinical study evaluated horses aged 20 and over. The calculator names horses from 15 older horses and from 20 senior horses.
When is a horse fully grown?
Many horses have reached around 95 percent of their future height at the withers by the time they are 2 years old, but often continue to mature until they are 6 years old. Cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals can continue to grow up to 4 to 6 years of age, according to PetMD.
When can you start riding a horse?
The guideline for animal protection in equestrian sport states 30 months as the earliest start for targeted training. The state representative for animal protection in Lower Saxony emphasizes that growth is not yet complete and that every horse should be given the time it needs.
How old do horses get?
We have not found a reliable average. A review article states that horses aged 15 and over are considered old and can live to be more than 40 years old.
