Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Sredneasiatskaya Ovtcharka)

Mittelasiatischer Schäferhund als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: helle Landhausküche

Harsh living conditions and constant battles against attackers shaped this dog, says the FCI standard, teaching them to conserve energy. Seeing a Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Sredneasiatskaya Ovtcharka) lie quietly in the garden for half the day shows exactly that. When something happens at the fence, they are on their feet in seconds.

From the Caspian Sea to China

According to the standard, natural selection shaped this dog over more than four thousand years in an area extending from the Caspian Sea to China and from the southern Urals to Afghanistan. The ancestors were nomadic herding dogs closely related to Mongolian Shepherd Dogs and the Tibetan Mastiff. Planned breeding began around 1930, and the FCI definitively recognised the breed on 25.01.1989. A neighbour to the west is the Caucasian Shepherd Dog.

Calm, proud and highly territorial

Self-assured, balanced, calm, proud and independent, says the standard, as well as very courageous, willing to work, enduring and naturally territorial. Fearlessness towards large attackers is expressly part of the breed. These dogs defend what they consider theirs without waiting for your command. Good guidance means experiencing plenty of ordinary situations together early on, clear routines and no power games. Your local public order office can tell you whether a dog of this calibre is subject to restrictions where you live.

Not mature until three

According to the standard, full maturity comes at around three years. Until then, a puppy grows into a dog weighing at least 40 kilos (female) or 50 kilos (male), while remaining mentally young for a long time. Practise loose-lead walking while you can still hold them, and avoid overloading growing joints with stairs, jumps and long jogs.

Short or long-coated

With either the shorter or longer outer coat, weekly brushing usually suffices, much more often during shedding. According to the standard, traditional ear cropping and tail docking continue in the country of origin and countries without a legal ban. This is prohibited in Germany, and the standard treats a natural tail as equally acceptable.

A genetic test against skin blistering

We found no lifespan study; McMillan and colleagues did not analyse the breed. A severe inherited disease is documented: two newborn littermates had such extensive blistering of the skin and mucous membranes that they were euthanised. A variant in the COL7A1 gene was responsible. Of 47 Central Asian Shepherds tested, 13 carried it, around 28 percent, while none of 39 Caucasian Shepherds did (Niskanen et al. 2017). Disease occurs only when the variant is inherited from both parents, so ask for evidence that at most one parent is a carrier.

A good partner for

Calm, experienced people with plenty of space and a high fence, who appreciate a quiet housemate and accept a dog guarding house and grounds according to their own judgement.

Less suitable for

First-time owners, city flats, households with constantly changing visitors and anyone seeking a companion for dog sports or off-lead woodland walks.

The breed quiz helps you assess whether such an independent giant fits your everyday life; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers a more thorough guide. For a new puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Capture your Central Asian Shepherd as a poster in a wooden frame or as digital artwork to download.
