Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever im Aquarell-Stil mit Namen Charlie im Holzrahmen

A Golden Retriever gives you a full welcome: wagging hindquarters, often something in the mouth, and that look saying, “At last, you’re here.” Behind it is a working dog bred for hunting who still wants a job.

Origins

The Golden Retriever is a British gundog bred to retrieve shot game, including from water. Like the Labrador, the FCI standard places it among Retrievers with a working trial. Hunting strengths, a soft mouth, endurance and love of water, still shape the breed.

Temperament

The standard describes eagerness to learn, intelligence, natural working ability, friendliness and confidence. Many owners find a gentle, cooperative, biddable dog. Solitude and boredom are difficult: a Golden wants to join in.

Exercise and activity

Around two hours of daily exercise is realistic, plus mental work. Retrieving, tracking, dummy training and swimming bring enjoyment. A Golden limited to circling the block becomes restless and invents activities.

Grooming

The dense undercoat looks wonderful and costs time: two to three weekly brushes, daily during shedding. Otherwise, mats form behind ears, on tail and breeches. Dry and check drop ears after swimming.

Health

Cancer is a serious Golden Retriever concern. In a University of California, Davis veterinary-faculty analysis, 424 of 652 Golden Retrievers, or 65 per cent, died of cancer (Kent et al. 2018). These are American clinical-population data and cannot be transferred directly to European breeding lines. As with all large retrievers, parental hip and elbow dysplasia assessments and eye examinations belong to responsible breeding. New lumps or sudden loss of stamina need prompt veterinary attention.

Who does the Golden Retriever suit?

Families and first-time owners with time for exercise and grooming. People wanting to take their dog everywhere and enjoying work together.

Who is the breed less suited to?

Homes where the dog is alone for many hours, or people fundamentally bothered by hair on the sofa. Anyone unable to budget reserves for later treatments should calculate honestly too.
