Shepherds called the breed Bas-Rouge, or red stockings, for the tan markings on all four feet. Under that name, Chien de Beauce and Beauceron (Berger de Beauce), the old shepherd dogs of the French plains were brought together at the end of the 19th century.

Herding dog of the plains
According to the standard, these dogs were selected for their ability to lead and protect the flock. At the time, they had cropped ears and were mostly black and tan, although grey, solid black and solid fawn dogs existed too. The standard names herding and guarding as their roles; definitive recognition dates from 25.11.1963.
A large dog with a frank expression
Large, solid, rustic and muscular without heaviness: that is the standard’s picture. It requires confident, fearless behaviour and a frank expression, never mean, fearful or restless. At home, this is a self-assured guardian needing clear, fair guidance. Harshness achieves nothing. The breed shares its role and head proportions with its longhaired compatriot, the Briard (Berger de Brie).
Two thumbs on each hind leg
Tradition gives the Beauceron double dewclaws on the hind legs, well-separated thumbs with nails. Missing dewclaws or only one disqualify. The current standard describes natural ears only: half-pricked or hanging, with fully erect ears disqualifying. Dewclaw nails barely wear down, so check and trim them regularly.
Built for a long trot
The standard calls for a long, ground-covering trot. This dog is made for distance, needing extended daily outings and mental work: tracking, obedience, herding or mantrailing. Guarding the garden alone is insufficient. The short, thick coat needs weekly brushing, more during shedding.
Deafness and the harlequin pattern
Since 2014, French breeders reported puppies born deaf: twelve black-and-tan dogs from several litters. The cause is a recessively inherited CDH23 variant, independent of coat colour. Among 90 unrelated French Beaucerons, 3,3 per cent carried it; a genetic test detects carriers (Abitbol et al. 2023). The same paper describes harlequin as a merle pattern on a black-and-tan base. Double-merle dogs may be deaf and often have eye defects; DNA testing identifies the variant (Strain 2015). Two harlequins should therefore not be mated. We found no reliable lifespan figure.
Who suits this dog
Experienced dog owners with space, time and enthusiasm for training, seeking a watchful, calm partner and providing real activity. Families with older children can manage if the rules apply to everyone.
Who should choose another dog
First-time owners, people short of time or those seeking a companion for an upstairs flat take on too much with this large guardian. A dog who independently assesses strangers also fits poorly in a home with unfamiliar people constantly coming and going.
To see whether a large herding dog with guarding instincts suits you, try the breed quiz, with greater depth in the book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). If your Bas-Rouge already lives with you, our dog portraits turn your photo into a picture, for example a poster in a wooden frame.
