When the University of Perugia’s animal blood bank set out to establish reference values for hunting dogs, a French breed formed the largest group: 156 healthy Ariégeois came to donate blood (Miglio et al. 2020). In its home département of Ariège, this dog is known as a light, agile hare hunter.

A briquet with the blood of large pack hounds
According to the standard, it developed in Ariège from crossing a local briquet with a pack hound used to pursue roe deer and red deer, possibly the Grand Bleu de Gascogne or the Gascon Saintongeois. It retained their characteristic physical features but is smaller, lighter and less imposing. The FCI has definitively recognised it since 1954.
Cheerful, sociable and responsive
The standard describes a cheerful, sociable temperament and a willingness to follow guidance. At work, it is diligent and enterprising in putting up game, has a good voice and works out a trail quickly. In everyday life, this can mean a friendly dog keen to join in, provided no fresh hare trail is calling.
A lightly built hare hunter
Hare is its preferred quarry, but it is also used for roe deer and wild boar, alone or in packs, in shooting hunts and mounted hunts. Its light build helps on difficult terrain. Without hunting work, it needs daily endurance activity: long distances, tracking and search games. Off-lead freedom works only where there is no game.
Little coat, delicate ears
The short, fine hair requires little work; a rubber grooming mitt once a week is enough. The thin, curled ears reaching the nose need more attention: check them for grass awns, scratches and ticks after woodland walks.
Health: blood values rather than disease statistics
A lifespan figure is lacking, and the Ariégeois does not appear in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis. Its blood, however, has been studied thoroughly. In the Perugia study, standard laboratory ranges did not fit seven values, including urea, creatinine and the liver enzyme ALT, so the authors established breed-specific reference intervals. Of 92 blood-typed Ariégeois in Italy, 95,7 per cent were DEA 1 positive. The calculated risk of developing antibodies after a first unmatched transfusion was only 4,2 per cent (Medina Valentin et al. 2017). Tell your vet about both findings if blood results are unusual or a transfusion is needed.
Who it suits
Hunters seeking a light, fast hare hound, and active rural people wanting a friendly, medium-sized dog with stamina and a clear voice.
Probably not for you if
you live entirely in town, keep rabbits in an outdoor run or a hound’s voice would attract too much attention in your block of flats. If you cannot provide a hare, you must provide a trail.
Whether a cheerful hare hunter fits your daily life is a question our breed quiz answers in a few minutes; our book goes deeper: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). With a puppy at home, the free Puppy Starter Pack guides you through the first weeks. Black patches on white look clear and graphic as a digital artwork or on a magazine cover on canvas.
