Dog names 2026: 150 ideas that really suit your dog

Puppy with a collar and name tag tilting its head

The name usually arrives in the first few hours, often before collection, sometimes on the drive home from the breeder as the puppy falls asleep on your lap. Then it stays for twelve or fifteen years, called in the park, shouted in the woods and whispered on the sofa. That makes it worth a brief thought before it becomes final. Not a long one. Just a brief one.

Five rules for a good dog name

  • Two syllables. They are easiest to call and sound clearly different from cues. “Bruno” works; “Maximilian-Alexander” will become “Max” anyway.
  • A clear vowel sound at the end. Names ending in -a, -o, -i or -y carry well: Luna, Bruno, Kiki, Sammy.
  • No sound-alike cues. In German, “Nina” sounds like “Nein”, and “Litz” like “Sitz”. Say the name aloud alongside the cues you use.
  • The embarrassment test. Can you call it loudly three times in the woods while someone watches? Then it works. “Schnuckiputzi” often fails here.
  • It still needs to fit in ten years. “Welpi” or “Mini” for a dog that will weigh 40 kilos is humour with an expiry date.

The most popular dog names in Germany

TASSO, Europe’s largest pet register with over 6,3 million registered dogs, analyses new registrations every year. The leaders are remarkably stable: Luna has topped the female names for over ten years, while Milo replaced long-standing male favourite Balu in 2024.

If your dog already has a name

A shelter dog usually arrives with a name. You can change it, especially if it has negative associations. Dogs learn a new name in one to two weeks when it is consistently linked with something good: say the name, give a treat, done. If the old name sounds good and the dog responds happily, keep it. They have earned it.

Once the name is chosen

It goes on the collar, in the TASSO registration and eventually beneath the first portrait. A name in small lettering under the picture, sometimes with the arrival date, turns a lovely picture into something personal. It is straightforward: add the name when ordering, and you can see its placement before printing.

Until then, the name is the only thing you already share. What grows from it can later hang on the wall among our dog portraits as a poster, in a wooden frame, on canvas or on acrylic glass.

If the name is your first decision, the rest follows quickly: house-training, bite inhibition and being alone. Our book covers what lies ahead in the first months: Welpenerziehung & Junghundtraining (book in German).

Once the name is chosen, moving-in day follows. For the first 30 days, our free Puppy Starter Pack includes a shopping list and a 4-week plan.
