Can cats eat salad?

Frische grüne Salatblätter auf einem Holzbrett

Green: harmless

Yes, a lettuce leaf every now and then is fine. Pumpkin's veterinarian-approved guide calls lettuce safe for cats, but low in nutrients. Iceberg lettuce provides the least.

Why the traffic light is green

There is nothing in the lettuce leaf that is poisonous to cats. However, there isn't much good in it either. Cats are strict carnivores and don't need vegetables. Veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell writes at PetMD that cats don't digest vegetables well and it's completely okay if your cat turns up his nose at your salad. If she shows interest, you can offer her small amounts as an occasional snack.

Some cats like to nibble on greens. International Cat Care notes that all plants, even grass, can irritate the stomach and induce vomiting. This is usually harmless with a lettuce leaf, but it explains why some cats gag after it.

What you should pay attention to

  • Only pure: No dressing, no vinegar, no salt. According to the ASPCA, onions, chives and garlic damage red blood cells, and cats are particularly sensitive.
  • Mixed salad: A finished salad often contains onions, croutons, cheese or grapes. Give only a single, clean sheet.
  • Wash well: This is how you remove soil and residue.
  • Small amounts: According to Chewy, vegetables should make up no more than 10 percent of your daily calories.
  • Observe: Some cats do not tolerate green foods well, according to PetMD. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea.

What to do if your cat ate lettuce?

A few leaves of pure lettuce are nothing to worry about. A single choking or vomiting afterwards occurs. If she's caught salad with dressing, onions or garlic, call the vet's office, even if she still seems fit. Does she vomit several times or stop eating, too.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. If your cat likes to nibble, cat grass is the more suitable choice.
