Yellow: with caution
A little cooked rice won't harm a healthy cat, but it doesn't need it. Veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell at PetMD recommends skipping rice unless there is a specific reason, and then giving it less than a tablespoon per week.
Why the traffic light is yellow
Cats are strict carnivores. According to PetMD, carbohydrates provide no real benefit and can contribute to obesity, which in turn promotes diabetes, osteoarthritis and heart disease. Brown rice is slightly more nutritious than white rice, but cats also have difficulty digesting the high starch load.
Many people know rice as a light diet. For dogs, rice with cooked mince is a classic, but according to PetMD, this doesn't work well for cats because they digest rice poorly. If your cat vomits more than once or twice a month, it should be taken to the practice, especially if it loses weight, has diarrhea or appears weak.
What you should pay attention to
- Only cooked and pure: Without butter, salt or spices. Pan fried rice often contains onions and oil.
- Amount: Less than one tablespoon per week, and only with complete cat food.
- Kittens: According to PetMD, they should not be given carbohydrates such as rice because they need a precisely balanced diet to grow.
- Better alternatives: Purely cooked boneless chicken, turkey, beef, tuna or salmon.
What to do if your cat has eaten rice?
Cooked rice from the plate is usually harmless. For raw rice, regardless of the amount, PetMD recommends calling your vet's office. Possible consequences include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, a bloated stomach, straining on the litter box and fatigue. If such signs occur, go immediately.
If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.
Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. The cat food calculator.
