Can cats eat cheese?

Stück Hartkäse mit kleinen Würfeln auf hellem Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

A cube-sized piece of solid cheese is fine for a healthy cat as a rare exception, nothing more. Cheese is not poisonous and contains protein and calcium. However, according to veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell (PetMD), many, perhaps most, adult cats are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products.

Why the traffic light is yellow

Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or flatulence in sensitive cats. Milk sugar is usually behind this: According to the ASPCA, pets produce little lactase, the enzyme that breaks it down.

The second point is the calories. PetMD calculates that a 1-ounce piece of cheddar for a cat is about the same as two and a half cheeseburgers for a human. For an animal that needs very little energy overall, a bite like this has a significant impact. Because cheese is not poisonous, but can quickly cause problems, the traffic light is yellow.

What you should pay attention to

  • Solid, pure varieties: PetMD lists Cheddar, Emmental, Parmesan, Provolone and Gouda as better candidates if your cat can tolerate dairy products.
  • Avoid soft cheese: Cottage cheese, cream cheese, mozzarella, Brie, Camembert and blue cheese tend to contain more lactose, according to PetMD.
  • No cheese dishes: Cheesecakes, cheese crackers and baked goods contain sugar, fat and sometimes toxic ingredients such as garlic.
  • Quantity: A maximum of a cube-sized piece, and no more than once or twice a week, divided into small chunks.
  • Previous illnesses: For cats with chronic intestinal inflammation, diabetes, liver problems or pancreatitis, it is better to ask the veterinary practice first.

What to do if your cat ate cheese?

If your healthy cat has stolen a small piece, all that usually happens is a slightly upset stomach. Watch her for a few days. If she eats less, vomits or has diarrhea, call the vet's office. If the cheese was seasoned, for example with garlic or herbs, say so straight away.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. The cat food calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide pills in cheese? A tiny piece of hard cheese is an exception for a dairy-tolerant cat, according to PetMD. If you are taking medication, ask the practice whether it can be given with food.

Which cheese is best tolerated by cats? Solid, pure hard cheeses such as Cheddar, Emmental or Gouda, because soft cheese tends to contain more lactose.
