Can cats eat shrimp?

Geschälte, gegarte Garnelen auf hellem Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Half to a whole cooked, peeled shrimp once or twice a week is fine for a healthy cat. Veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell at PetMD mentions this amount. Shrimp are not poisonous, but they are not complete food either.

Why the traffic light is yellow

The meat itself is not a problem. Be careful when preparing: raw shrimp can contain bacteria and must therefore be fully cooked. The shell and tail provide little nutrition and can lead to choking or intestinal obstruction. Spices and dressings are the third trap, as some contain garlic. According to the ASPCA, garlic and onions can damage red blood cells, and cats are particularly sensitive to this.

The size of your cat helps with the amount: PetMD states half a shrimp per serving for small cats and about a whole shrimp per serving for large animals, as an example a Maine Coon weighing around 7 kilograms.

What you should pay attention to

  • Cook completely: Boiled or steamed, never raw.
  • Shell and tail off: First let it cool, then peel and cut into small pieces.
  • Without anything: No garlic butter, no salt, no marinade, no cocktail sauce.
  • Test first: Give a sample the first time and see whether vomiting, diarrhea or stomach ache follows. Then stop.
  • Ten percent limit: Shrimp, like all extras, count towards the maximum ten percent of daily calories.

What to do if your cat has eaten shrimp?

A cooked, pure shrimp is usually no problem. If your cat has eaten shrimp with the shell on, look for gagging, vomiting, loss of appetite or a hard, bloated stomach and call the vet's office if you see any signs like this. If the shrimp were prepared with garlic, report back there and say approximately how much was eaten.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. The cat food calculator.
