Can cats eat strawberries?

Frische Erdbeeren, eine halbiert, auf hellem Holzbrett

Green: harmless

Strawberries are non-toxic for cats, safe, but not necessary. That's how veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell at PetMD puts it. A small, sliced berry is a harmless summer snack if your cat shows any interest at all.

Why the traffic light is green

Strawberries contain some vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants and a lot of water. For a strict carnivore, the nutritional value is low, but small amounts do no harm. Many cats are hardly interested in it anyway because they don't have functioning receptors for sweet taste.

Green here means: harmless in the right amount. PetMD recommends a maximum of one small, sliced strawberry per day for a healthy cat, and only a few times per week. Too much can cause vomiting or diarrhea. According to PetMD, a true strawberry allergy is unlikely, but an intolerance can lead to digestive problems after the first time.

What you should pay attention to

  • Wash, remove greens, cut into small pieces: Remove stem and leaves, divide into bite-sized pieces.
  • No processed strawberries: Dried, candied, canned or chocolate-covered strawberries contain a lot of sugar.
  • Not if you have diabetes or are overweight: PetMD advises against this because of the sugar.
  • Kitten: Small quantities work, but the pieces have to be particularly small.
  • Ten percent limit: Fruit is one of the treats that together make up a maximum of ten percent.

What to do if your cat ate strawberries?

If your cat has eaten more strawberries than planned, expect soft stool or vomiting. Watch them and put fresh water. If the symptoms last longer than 24 hours or are severe, call the vet's office. If the strawberries were covered in chocolate, get in touch immediately.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. The cat food calculator.
