Can cats eat bread?

Scheibe Weißbrot auf hellem Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

A piece of plain bread is not toxic to cats, but raw yeast dough is dangerous. Veterinarian Sandra C. Mitchell at PetMD calls baked bread primarily empty calories. For them, unbaked dough is a case for emergency service.

Why the traffic light is yellow

Bread consists mainly of carbohydrates. Cats, on the other hand, primarily need nutrients from meat, which is why bread brings them nothing but calories. According to PetMD, white bread and wheat bread are the least problematic, but only in small quantities.

It becomes dangerous with raw yeast dough. It can break up in a warm stomach and cause painful flatulence. During fermentation, the yeast produces alcohol, which can cause alcohol poisoning. The ASPCA even describes the risk of life-threatening gastric torsion when fermenting dough. The second danger is ingredients: Garlic bread is taboo because of the garlic, and sugar-free breads may contain xylitol, which PetMD considers highly toxic to cats.

What you should pay attention to

  • No more than the size of a thumbnail: PetMD states this amount, no more than once or twice a week.
  • No dough: Never leave yeast dough, pizza dough or bread dough open while it rises.
  • No garlic bread: Garlic butter can also make you sick.
  • Avoid sweet breads: Banana, pumpkin or raisin bread contain sugar, spices or toxic ingredients.
  • Be careful with diabetes: Cats on a low-carbohydrate diet should not be given bread at all.

What to do if your cat has eaten bread or dough?

Most healthy cats feel fine after a piece of plain bread. Call the vet's office if the bread contained garlic, sugar, or spices. Raw yeast dough and anything with xylitol are an emergency: go immediately, don't wait. Typical warning signs include a bloated stomach, choking, vomiting, staggering and restlessness.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the regular food. The cat food calculator.
