Can cats eat zucchini?

Green: harmless

Yes, zucchini is non-toxic to cats. The ASPCA, the American Animal Welfare Association's poison control center, lists zucchini as non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

Why the traffic light is green

The traffic light is green because of the clear classification by the ASPCA. Veterinarian Paola Cuevas also writes in the Catster guide that zucchini is low in calories and carbohydrates and provides fiber, magnesium and potassium.

Nevertheless, it remains an extra. Cats are strict carnivores and need animal protein above all else. According to Catster, zucchini should not displace other valuable foods. If your cat is on a diet, a cube of zucchini can be a low-calorie substitute for a treat. It does not replace the food itself.

According to Catster, allergic reactions are rare, but possible. When you first try it, look out for swelling, itching, breathing problems or digestive problems.

What you should pay attention to

  • Offer pure: Steamed, cooked or raw, but without spices, lots of oil or onions.
  • Wash well and cut into small pieces: The pieces should be large enough for your cat to chew and swallow comfortably. Catster suggests peeling them.
  • Increase slowly: Catster recommends starting with one or two pieces.
  • Not a food substitute: According to Catster, zucchini should not replace other healthy food. A few extra pieces are enough.

What to do if your cat has eaten zucchini?

If your cat has eaten a piece of pure zucchini, you don't have to do anything. At most, unusually soft feces are possible.

If the zucchini comes from a dish with onions, garlic or hot spices, call the vet's office. If you have swelling in your face or shortness of breath, drive off immediately.

If poisoning is suspected, go to the vet immediately or to the veterinary emergency service.

Treats and extras are part of the daily ration, so subtract them from the food. It's best to give new things in tiny amounts first and see how your cat tolerates it.
