Can dogs eat eggs?

Eier auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, if the egg is fully cooked. Hard-boiled or scrambled without fat or seasoning, an egg is a protein-rich snack for dogs. The ASPCA, the American animal welfare organisation with its own poison control service, advises against raw eggs.

Why eggs are marked yellow

Yellow means: only when prepared properly. According to the ASPCA, raw eggs can carry bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can make dogs and people ill. Raw egg white also contains an enzyme that interferes with the absorption of certain vitamins and can harm the skin and coat over time. The American Kennel Club (AKC) identifies biotin in this context. Cooking eggs thoroughly solves both problems. Raw eggs have their own separate entry.

How to serve eggs safely

  • Cook thoroughly: Hard-boiled or firmly set, not soft-boiled.
  • Keep them plain: No oil, butter, salt or seasoning.
  • Only occasionally: Eggs contain plenty of calories. According to the AKC, they are an occasional snack rather than a daily necessity; otherwise the total food allowance quickly becomes too large.
  • Leave out the shell: According to the AKC, sharp edges can injure the throat and digestive tract.
  • Introduce slowly: Egg allergies are rare, but they do occur.

What if your dog has eaten a raw egg?

Usually nothing happens. Keep an eye on your dog over the next few days. If your dog develops a fever, vomits, has diarrhoea or seems weak, call your vet: according to the AKC, these can be signs of Salmonella infection. Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
