Gifts for dog grandma and grandpa: 7 personal ideas

Weiße Hundeoma-Tasse mit Labradorportrait und Namen Bruno auf einem Tisch neben einem Ledersessel

Looking for a gift for a dog grandma or dog grandpa that says more than “Thanks for looking after him”? The best choice is something they will enjoy using and that shows their granddog. A mug might suit the breakfast table, a calendar the kitchen wall. If they already have enough things, they may appreciate an afternoon together more.

Here are seven ideas with practical tips for choosing. You do not need a studio photo or a large parcel. A good phone photo and a little thought about the recipient’s everyday life are a better place to start.

Before choosing: three things to consider

Will they use it? Does dog grandma check a wall calendar every morning, or are all her appointments on her phone? Does dog grandpa have a favourite mug that no one is allowed to replace? A gift can fit the habits they already have.

Is there room for it? A wall picture needs a free spot. Another mug may not help if the cupboard is already full. For a larger gift, it is better to ask than to assume there is space.

Which photo do you have? The eyes and coat markings should be sharp, and both ears should be fully visible. Use the original file if possible. Cropping tightly will not add detail to a photo where the dog is tiny in the background.

Seven gifts for dog grandma and grandpa

1. A mug with their granddog

The photo mug for dog grandma and grandpa combines a pet portrait with the chosen grandparent title and the dog’s name. A short matching line appears on the back. You can choose a white ceramic mug or one with a coloured inside. Each holds 325 ml and, according to the product description, is suitable for the dishwasher and microwave.

For a pair of grandparents, two mugs with different designs may make sense. Check how each person likes to be addressed, and double-check the dog’s name. Before ordering, also look at the product images to see which side is shown and how your design will be positioned.

Our short video “For the very best dog grandma” gives you an idea of the gift. It is a product example, not a customer testimonial.

2. A pack mug if there is more than one pet

If there are two or three grandpets, you do not have to choose just one. The pack mug for two or three pets can show a dog and a cat together, too. Upload a separate photo for each pet and add its name.

Gather the photos before you start designing. Similar angles and similarly bright lighting help the finished image feel cohesive. Check the preview to make sure each name belongs to the right pet and is easy to read in the small space.

3. A wall calendar for the coming year

The 2027 pet wall calendar suits people who like to keep appointments in sight. It is A4 in portrait orientation and, according to the product description, measures a little over 60 cm high when open. Measure the intended spot rather than relying on the size of a closed A4 sheet.

The photo area is wider than it is tall. A landscape photo works well, while a portrait photo will be cropped to fit. Check the crop in the preview. The calendar uses a German date layout, so it is especially suitable for someone who wants to use it in German.

Allow more time than you would for an item picked up spontaneously: check the product page for the current preview and delivery details before ordering, especially ahead of Christmas.

4. A portrait for a spot you have chosen

A dog portrait from your own photo is an idea for grandparents who like to display or hang pictures. Start with the room they already have. A subtle design can fit among family photos, while a bold style needs a place of its own.

Cut a piece of paper to the picture size you have in mind and hold it against the chosen spot. That gives you a better sense of the format than looking at a screen. If you do not know their home well, choose the picture together or give them a card with the idea first.

5. A wooden tree ornament with the dog’s name

If the grandparents decorate a Christmas tree, a wooden ornament with a dog portrait can be a small personal addition. The shop offers six shapes, including a heart, star and bell. The design fills the chosen shape.

Choose a photo where the dog’s head is easy to recognise. On a small surface, a clear crop and readable name matter more than lots of extra detail. Wood has its own grain and may show natural variations, so it looks different from a smooth ceramic print.

6. A guidebook if they help care for a young dog

A dog book is a good gift only if the recipient is interested in reading one. Someone who occasionally walks an adult dog does not automatically need a puppy guide. It is better to ask whether they would welcome reading together than to make the gift feel like a lesson in training.

Our books are in German. For help with a puppy or young dog, you can also share our free puppy starter pack.

7. Time together with a date in mind

If their home is already full of keepsakes, give them an afternoon together. It could be breakfast, a short outing or a walk along a familiar route. Ask what suits the grandparents and the dog rather than planning a long hike that may be too much for someone.

A card that says “I’m inviting you to breakfast on Sunday” is easier to use than “We should do something soon.” The dog can come along if the place and situation are right for it. Otherwise, spending time together without the dog is just as good a gift.

A small extra to make the next visit easier

If the grandparents look after the dog regularly, add a short note that you have agreed on together: food and portions, important intolerances, people to contact and the vet’s practice. Medication and special care need a clear discussion, not a casual note on a gift tag.

It is best to plan treats together as well. The WSAVA recommends that treats provide less than ten percent of a dog’s daily calories. This is a share of calories, not a weight in grams. Illnesses, intolerances or a prescribed diet may call for different choices; check with the veterinary practice. Setting out an agreed portion for a visit is more useful than simply asking someone not to give “too much”.

Before ordering: check the photo, preview and timing

Enlarge the photo until the dog’s head fills the screen. Are the eyes and coat markings still clear? If not, look for a better picture. Our guide to taking dog photos has tips on lighting and angles.

Check the name, grandparent title, style, material and size. Read the specific product page to see how the preview and approval work and what changes are included. Check the current delivery information there, too. A preview is not yet a finished gift in the parcel.

If you still need a good photo, you can choose one together with the grandparents. A personal card with a specific thank-you works just as well if the finished gift arrives later.
