Green: safe
Yes, cooked rice is fine for dogs. Veterinary-reviewed information from PetMD describes rice as non-toxic to dogs, provided it is served plain and unseasoned.

Why rice is fine
Rice is mild and easy to digest. The MSD Veterinary Manual lists cottage cheese with rice or chicken with rice as examples of bland food when reintroducing meals after a dog has vomited. According to PetMD, white rice is particularly suitable for mild digestive upsets; brown rice is also safe. Rice therefore makes a straightforward addition in small amounts.
What to watch for
- Cook it plain: Fried or seasoned rice may contain garlic, onions or a lot of salt, which are harmful to dogs.
- An addition, not a complete meal: According to MSD, a diet consisting only of meat and rice can lead to calcium deficiency. Rice does not replace balanced dog food.
- Diabetes or excess weight: White rice causes blood sugar to rise quickly. PetMD recommends asking your vet first in these cases.
- Count it in: Rice provides energy and counts towards the daily allowance; otherwise, the bowl quietly gets fuller.
What if your dog has eaten seasoned rice?
A spoonful of rice from the frying pan is usually no disaster. But check what it contained. If there were onions, garlic or leeks, call your vet, because the ASPCA says alliums can damage red blood cells. Explain roughly how much your dog ate and how much they weigh. Also call if diarrhoea or vomiting does not settle.
If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
