Why the traffic light is yellow
According to the Finnish study by Saastamoinen and Särkijärvi (2020), linseed contains substances that can be toxic or nutritionally unfavorable, including hydrocyanic acid-forming glycosides. The hydrogen cyanide levels are below the dangerous threshold for humans. According to the authors, neither poisoning nor studies with information on daily intake have been described for horses. They note that heating reduces the content of hydrocyanic acid-forming glycosides. In their own experiment, the food was heated and soaked. Six mares received linseed compound feed for nine weeks, around 0.8 g dry matter of linseed per kg body weight per day.
